At 2,962 m, the Zugspitze is Germany’s highest mountain and one of the Alps’ most spectacular vantage points. In good weather with clear visibility, you can enjoy a view spanning four countries, featuring peaks of 2,000 and 3,000 metres and the only 4,000-metre peak in the Eastern Alps. From Ehrwald, you can reach the summit in just 10 minutes on the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn (cable car). The journey on the panoramic cable car is an experience in itself.
The Zugspitze summit is served by three cable cars. The first, the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn from Ehrwald, opened in 1926; the Eibsee Cable Car from Grainau in 1963; and the Bavarian Glacier Cable Car in 1992. The valley station of the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn is situated to the west at the foot of the Wetterstein massif at 1,225 m. The cable car climbs a vertical distance of 1,725 m.
