King Ludwig's castles

The Romantic Road leads from the Main to the Alps to Füssen, along medieval imperial cities and shows a life-friendly image of Germany that is interwoven with European history in many ways. No other German vacation route has become as famous worldwide as this one. And at the end of this road are some cultural gems that are well worth a visit. Ludwig's legacy.

King Ludwig II - the extraordinary Bavarian king

The myth was already forming during the king's lifetime. "I want to remain an eternal enigma to myself and others", Ludwig once wrote to his governess, and this enigma still fascinates people today. He was King of Bavaria from 1864 to 1886, was born on 25 August 1845 in Nymphenburg and died on Lake Starnberg on 13 June 1886. The Bavarian king put all his creative energy into the design and realization of several palaces and castles that make him unforgettable to this day.
